TOMASZ STANKO SEXTET Salzau - June 10, 2000 Tomasz Stanko - trumpet John Surman - soprano saxophone, bass clarinet Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon Michelle.
From the Green Hill is Tomasz Stanko's ECM follow-up to the deservedly acclaimed Litania - The Music of Kryzsztof Komeda. The Polish composer and trumpeter (and former Komeda sideman) teams up with countrywoman Michelle Makarski, ECM stalwarts saxophonist John Surman, bandoneon king Dino Saluzzi, drum god Jon Christensen, and bassist Anders Jormin. The set is comprised mainly of Stanko originals, but there are also compositions by Surman, and two by Komeda, including "Litania. Stanko's arrangements are carried out with equanimity and grace as well as precision and musicality. The result is an album that, while not as attention grabbing as Litania, is as musically inventive and challenging as its predecessor, and wholly more satisfying than most of what comes from Eastern Europe in the name of jazz at the end of the 20th century.
From the Green Hill is an album by Polish jazz trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stańko recorded in 1998 and released on the ECM label. This is an ensemble of powerful individuals and no less than three composers among them.

If ever a recording lends itself easily to facile journalistic text-bites-it's the Tomasz Stanko tango album! Pensive Polish trumpet player explores the music of his Eastern European roots! If there were such as thing as Argentine klezmer, surely Stanko would have the genre to himself!-and so on.
From the Green Hill is a post-fusion contemporary music album recording by TOMASZ STAŃKO released in 1998 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. Tomasz Stanko - From the Green Hill (CD, ECM Records, 1999). From the Green Hill by Tomasz Stanko.
Tomasz Stanko: Trumpet John Surman: Baritone Saxophone, Bass Clarinet Dino Saluzzi: Bandoneon Michelle Makarski: Violin Anders Jormin: Double-Bass Jon Christensen: Drums. Using a different lineup (including John Surman on baritone saxophone and bass clarinet, Dino Saluzzi on bandoneon, and Michelle Makarski sparingly on violin), Stanko creates another masterpiece. The mood is again introspective and atmospheric, including the pieces written by Surman. Litania," a chorale by Komeda, appears twice played on bandoneon, almost as tears
