From the label page :"A variety of musics by the Mang'anja, Yao and Cewa peoples, found in the 1950s in the southern half of Malawi - the beautiful bangwe zither, the magnificent tuned drum likhuba ensembles, brilliant xylophone playing, a small big band of kazoos. Such a richness of good music, creativity and identity - and so well-recorded.
Of particular note is the first track, "Timba," which showcases the spiky falsetto vocal range and smoking bangwe board zither playing of Limited Mgundo Phiri.

These Mwenda recordings surfaced in the archive after Michael Baird had completed the series and we felt that we could not let them fall back into oblivion.

He knew our art gallery at JCC and thought it would be a very interesting exhibition – notably with a few records of Malawian music, Deschamps said. He said this was an interesting exhibition as records covers illustrate music through art and photographs. Some of the exhibited works from Malawi include Malawi Grooves 1950, 57 and 58 by Hugh Tracey. Tom Sangala – who has written 3896 posts on The Times Group.
