The Weakerthans is a Canadian indie rock band. The band was formed in 1997 in Winnipeg, Manitoba by John K. Samson, after he left the punk band Propagandhi to start a publishing company. Samson joined bassist John P. Sutton and drummer Jason Tait of Red Fisher, another band from Winnipeg's punk scene, and created The Weakerthans as a vehicle for a more melodic and introspective brand of songwriting than their previous projects.

This song is by The Weakerthans and appears on the album Left and Leaving (2000). I count to three and grin, you smile and let me inWe sit and watch the wall you painted purpleSpeech will spill on space, our little cups of graceBut pauses rattle on about the way. That you cut the snow-fence, braved the blood, the metal of those heartsThat you always end up pressing your tongue toHow your body still remembers things you told it to forgetHow those furious affections followed you.
Watermark" is a song by the Canadian indie rock band The Weakerthans from their 2000 album Left and Leaving. It was released as a CD single in January 2001 through G7 Welcoming Committee Records in Canada and through Sub City Records in the United States, including live acoustic recordings of "Illustrated Bible Stories for Children" and "The Last Last One" as B-sides. These two tracks were recorded for radio station CKUW-FM in Winnipeg
Admittedly held back by the fact that it is only three tracks long, the Weakerthans' follow-up EP to 2000's phenomenal Left and Leaving doesn't compare so much as serve to remind fans and critics of what makes this band so good. Far distanced from his days as "the quiet guy" in Propaghandi, John K. Samson has become a fine pop songwriter with the talent to fuse catchy melodies with punk rock
