Meyer Harris "Mickey" Cohen (September 4, 1913 – July 29, 1976) was an American gangster based in Los Angeles and boss of the Cohen crime family. He also had strong ties to the Italian American Mafia from the 1930s through 1960s. Mickey Cohen was born on September 4, 1913, into an Orthodox Jewish family living in the Jewish Brownsville section of Brooklyn. His mother Fanny, who had become widowed in September 1914, had emigrated from Kiev, Ukraine.

During the Great Depression he boxed professionally, and acted as muscle for both Mafiosi and Jewish gang bosses in Cleveland, New York and Chicago. Mickey Mantle played for the New York Yankees from 1951 to 1968, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.

Like his mentor Bugsy Siegel, Mickey Cohen was a Jewish-American gangster who worked his way up through the criminal underground. Before long, the feared mobster and former boxer was running Los Angeles. And with a natural charm and capacity for violence, Cohen moved into the movie business, exerting control over unions and demanding cuts of the profits from producers.
