In the 1920s, Southern record companies ventured to cities like Dallas, Atlanta, and New Orleans, where they set up primitive recording equipment in makeshift studios. They brought in street singers, medicine show performers, pianists from the juke joints and barrelhouses. A careful excavation of the earliest recordings of the blues by one of its foremost experts, Barrelhouse Blues expands our definition of that most American style of music. Library descriptions.
Barrelhouse blues gets its name from early American bars known as barrel houses, usually on the outskirts of town or near labor camps, where African-American workers would get together, drink, and dance. Liquor flowed straight from the barrel (thus the name), and a distinct brand of blues developed in the midst of what was, apparently, a pretty raucous scene.

This blues tribute to one of the Beatles's most important recordings has little to commend. The one truly outstanding cut is Joe Louis Walker's slow, soulful squeeze through "While My Guitar Gently Weeps," where his voice and lead guitar cry and moan, bringing the song's deep currents of pain to the surface. The album gets off to a bad start with a ponderous, leaden, dragging version of "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?," performed here by a group called "Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers. The very thing they seem to lack is drive; the drummer in particular seems to be holding the whole performance back.
