New albums from Melanie Oxley and the Necks' Chris Abrahams are hardly routine. Four years after the shimmering Jerusalem Bay, they launched Blood Oranges (Remote/Vitamin), revealing more of the duo's distinctive parenting of that problem child called pop, adding deft touches of sophistication to make the girl metamorphose into a woman. The new songs are, apart from Ladder, all Abrahams's work. The anti-showbiz presentation further emphasises the innocence, while some of the lyrics, such as the soft-core Cruel to You (from the new album), accentuate the sensuality. Then there is Abrahams's unique way of shading in both the light and the dark implications of the songs simultaneously.
