There are pretenders in emotive music that go through the motions and spurt out recycled pseudo-material that's much more style than substance. They get their buck, go home, and most of the listening public is unaware they've been had. But for every few dozen of the parroting charlatans, and for any who care to pay close enough attention, there's one that has that elusive "it" factor which sets them apart artistically. Such is Civil Twilight in its self-titled debut. Not to be pigeonholed into any specific category, Civil Twilight is equal parts balladry, tunefulness, and hints of rock, and the marriage of the three is a delight. Many have tried the formula but precious few succeed. Should U2 need a successor, we'll have a strong candidate. Within this realm, the danger is always in flirting with schmaltzy aspects of melancholy, but Steven McKeller knows the fine balance of impassioned imploring and saving something for the next refrain, allowing anticipation to play its own part. "Anybody Out There" and "Letters From the Sky" are top-notch emotionally-driven efforts, while "Perfect Stranger" is the glowing centerpiece, a wondrous track a few levels above that belies the band's inexperience. This is one of the ten best albums of 2009.
