Franz Schubert, Winterreise, D. 911. 1. Gute Nacht. Matthias Goerne is one of today's most eminent specialists of Schubert's Lieder. His discography testifies to the fact: beginning in 1997 with Goethe Lieder and leading to Wanderers Nachtlied in 2014, with the albums Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, Sehnsucht, An Mein Herz, and many others in between, Goerne's baritone voice seems to draw its life force from Schubert
Schubert's Winterreise performed by Matthias Goerne and Markus Hinterhäuser. 23 April 2019 - 12:03pm. Submitted by Music Freelance. This take on Schubert’s vast, late song cycle Winterreise presents a recital against a backdrop of animations by South African artist William Kentridge, recorded in Aix-en-Provence in 2014. The stage is littered with scraps of paper, overspill from the backdrop onto which the animations are projected.
Schubert: Winterreise D911. Matthias Goerne (baritone) & Markus Hinterhäuser (piano). Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, France, July 2015. Franz Schubert´s Winterreise engages with its audience in a new and unexpected form. Matthias Goerne, 'the voice of perfection' (Le Figaro), pianist Markus Hinterhäuser and South African director, set designer and theatrical artist William Kentridge joined forces on stage and traced newly imagined, deeply moving images. In short animated films, Kentridge visualises Goerne’s and Hinterhäuser’s sonic contribution. A memorable meeting 'of melancholy and magic' (La Marseillaise). Mr. Kentridge’s 24 stop-action films - made up of animated ink drawings and collages - offer.
A new dimension is added in this splendid Blu-ray, the visualizations of artist and film-maker William Kentridge. Kentridge's monochromatic animations, stripped down, sophisticated versions of the great experimental films of the surrealists and Canada's National Film Board, are so evocative.
