Track: Tarawa Artist: James Newton Howard Album: Snow Falling on Cedars Released: 1999.

Snow Falling on Cedars is a 1999 film directed by Scott Hicks. It is based on David Guterson's novel of the same name. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Set on the fictional San Piedro Island in the northern Puget Sound region of the Washington state coast in 1950, the plot revolves around the murder case of Kabuo Miyamoto (Rick Yune), a Japanese American accused of killing Carl Heine, a White fisherman.

James Newton Howard creates a tangible mood that carries over the entire (lengthy) album, and is consistently melancholy and altogether beautiful. This score's use of ethnic instruments is one of it's many strong suits, and their interplay with the orchestra, solo cello, and string-dominated orchestra might very well comprise some of Howard's best work to date. All in all, James Newton Howard is at the top of his game these days. With his success with The Sixth Sense and Snow Falling On Cedars ending this year, and his amazing work on Dinosaur still to come, it seems that he's firmly secured a place among the most sought-after film composers around. And with good reason-Snow Falling On Cedars is, to risk redundancy, some of Howard best work to date.

Snow Falling on Cedars Soundtrack. Snow Falling On Cedars (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). It contains emotion throughout the entire album, adding so much to the brilliance of the movie is was made for. James Newton Howard has done a masterful job in giving us cutting-edge vocals combined with deep bass penetrations and haunting strings to convey the melancholy and depression the film is so wonderful for. I found myself crying just thinking of the different scenes in the film as the music played, and was completely satisfied with the score.

The soundtrack to Scott Hicks' 1999 film Snow Falling on Cedars features a score by James Newton Howard, who also composed music for The Sixth Sense and My Best Friend's Wedding.

James Newton Howard (born June 9, 1951) is an American composer, conductor, music producer and musician. Snow Falling on Cedars is a 1994 award-winning novel written by American writer David Guterson. Guterson, who was a teacher at the time, wrote the book in the early morning hours over a ten-year period. Because of the success of the novel, however, he quit his job and began to write full-time.

James Newton Howard really did have quite a good, productive, year in 1999. His score for The Sixth Sense was one of the years' best, and he wrote scores for Mumford, Runaway Bride and a couple of other features, including the drama Snow Falling on Cedars, directed by Scott Hicks and starring Ethan Hawke, James Cromwell and Max von Sydow in a small, but impressive role. Like the composers' score for The Sixth Sense, the music for Snow Falling on Cedars is very atmospheric and textural. The track "Tarawa" is without doubt the highlight of the entire album. It's an amazing cue, for choir and orchestra. Extremely beautiful and highly emotional. James Newton Howard has really matured as a composer. Snow Falling on Cedars, along with The Sixth Sense, are two perfect examples of a side of the composer we haven't seen, or heard, much from.

One of the most outstanding works of James Newton Howard, and perhapse the best one. Its strenght is by the craft and art of combining western sweeping orchestra and japanese classical instrumentsation and the resolt is astonishing. It starts with mysterious humming sounds, then a whistle of the shakuhachi, the Japanese mesmorising flute, sending deep cry of danger from the fogy atmoshpere. and the story starts to unfold peice by peice through subtle minor sounds, like the shimering reflections of sunlight in the drops of rain on the leaves of the ceeder trees. it's almost meditative natural silence- not silent at all, but there's allways a feeling of tension and the presence of a great storm that is on its way. Cello keeps wheeping but in the deepest circles, like trying to portray the tragedy of young and innocent love ones, each from their own very different cultures, trapped in the reality of war and hatred. Fear is another feeling well portrayed here, and the drama of haunting memories from the war and the forbidden love story, ended without closure and lwaving behind lost yernings.Emotional, perfect for full cinematic landskapes, creates a whole world of purity and quietness in the heart and mind.
