The legendary Bob Mould – alt-rocker, electronic and acoustic artist and part-time DJ – had announced a series of intimate venues on a 25th anniversary tour of his debut solo album 'Workabout,' and the show was about to star. he stripped back stage, low lighting, and seated crowd set the scene for a quiet night of imagined nostalgia but, as ever the unexpected, Bob Mould dismissed those expectations, opening with a typical energy, and not an acoustic guitar in sight. Joined by another guitarist/bassist and cellist, Mould performed a string of hits from his extensive back catalogue.

This is what winter sounds like on a disc. It's dark, cold and desolate. The lyrics are mournful and angry with music either soft or explosive. The thing is the soft is way softer than normal for Bob on this release. It almost makes the rock numbers more of a welcome break except the beauty and brilliance of the softer numbers really begin to stand out after multiple listens. This is the sound of someone who is clearly in a dying relationship and is having a difficult time coping with the forthcoming demise. It's a brilliant album well worth listening to. Just don't put it on looking to be put in a good mood.
