Gordon Grdina's The Marrow . . From the June 22 2018 Debut Album Ejdeha Released on Songlines Recordings.

It was a most aggressive, confrontational album, but I attributed it to the guest appearance of one Mats Gustafsson on saxophone. Grdina's guitar and oud sounds were working within certain parameters, but this in no way prepared me for his new Haram project, an oud-led jazz ensemble playing middle eastern themes in crouching attack mode.

There's a part of the band that's kind of forbidden, doing a lot of traditional music in totally new ways," he says. But Grdina says Arabic music also has some of this built in. He cites the great Egyptian singer Oum Kalthoum constantly finding new ways to interpret songs, particularly in her radio broadcasts that were heard by millions across the Arabic-speaking world. For example, in another song on Haram's album "Her Eyes Illuminate" called "Sama'i Farahfaza. it opens on an introspective, twisting melody. A few minutes later, things get dissonant-risk is happening.

Gordon Grdina’s Haram (Songlines). Bio. Haram is a large ensemble led by Gordon Grdina which explores the Arabic classical repertoire from a modern improvisers perspective. Some pieces start out with a traditional treatment and then morph into a modern free jazz improv. The music is delicate and melancholic one moment and aggressive and unpredictable the next. Vancouver guitarist/oud player Gordon Grdina's music is all about call-and-response across every possible artistic pre-conception. His last record on Songlines, by his East Van Strings quartet (The Breathing of Statues, 2009), included intense, concentrated avant-garde pieces inspired by Bartok, Webern and Berg side-by-side with spacious excursions around Arabic modes.
Gord Grdina’s Haram is a sterling example of this very thing. Of the group’s gorgeous CD Her Eyes Illuminate (2015), Vancouver Sun’s Stuart Derdeyn says, This is one of the best releases of its kind to ever come out of Vancouver’s culture-blending music scene.
