The singers, adult and mixed in gender, mostly emerged from the choral groups of prominent English universities and cathedrals, but Rutter has certainly put his own stamp on them. His performances of Renaissance works tend to make them sound like his own music, with a sunny, slightly soprano-heavy sound (there are 12 sopranos and only seven or eight singers on the other voice parts) clear articulation of the texts and the polyphony, and a certain piety

The Cambridge Singers, John Rutter - The Heritage Of English Church Music, Volume 1 (LP, Album).
Most of these have full orchestral accompaniment, as Rutter prefers these versions over those with just organ, but there are also a few a cappella anthems thrown in as well, which sound just as lush and graceful as the orchestral ones. The brief, a cappella God be in my head uses a sixteenth century text and hints at the music used in churches from the same period.
The CD accompanies John Rutter's book European Sacred Music although it does stand quite happily on its own as an excellent introduction to European church music from the 16th to 18th centuries. The booklet notes with full texts and translations are both helpful and interesting and the music is superb. Before we survey the contents though we should applaud the excellent production and engineering by Simon Eadon: rarely has a CD both looked and sounded as good as this.
