Curtis is the debut album by American soul musician Curtis Mayfield, released in September 1970. Produced by Mayfield, it was released on his own label Curtom Records. The musical styles of Curtis moved further away from the pop-soul sounds of Mayfield's previous group The Impressions and featured more of a funk and ed sound. The album's subject matter incorporates political and social concerns of the time.

Curtis hooked this sharp lyric up to a sassy, bold and joyous funk that scarcely sounds like a lesson in straightening up and flying right, perhaps sensing that his message went down better with the youth if dressed in the sounds of a wild night out. We have enough preachers in the world, he later said. Mayfield’s soulful tune. However, that sweetness drains away for the album’s most desolate moment. Right on for the Darkness opens with a lonely guitar strum, and Curtis singing, I am blind and I cannot see. The sightlessness is not what breeds his blues, however: it’s that evil that men do, the injustice, the powerlessness. As the horns, strings and guitars – riding a writhing, agonisingly funky groove – tighten and sharpen, Mayfield’s chorus call, Right on for the darkness, finds him glorying in his blindness, for ignorance of this world is bliss.

What an extraordinary musician, performer, songwriter, producer & arranger Curtis Mayfield was. Certainly the first black musician to really use the album format as not just a forum for social commentary but also as an outlet for his own artistic vision. The Temptations may have cut one or two songs with the help of Norman Whitfield on albums such as Cloud Nine but really, it was Curtis Mayfield - a man in complete control of his own artistic direction from the outset - that smashed the doors down for the likes of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Bobby Womack, Gil Scott-Heron, The O-Jays, Sly Stone, Bill Withers, Isaac Hayes and countless others to follow. And, while his work with the Impressions was important, his impact really only truly began to resonate with the release of this set. It still remains difficult to imagine what listeners made of the exceptional opening track (Don't Worry) If There's Hell Below, We're All Gonna Go upon first listen at the time, despite the impact of hardcore gangster rap over subsequent decades. Certainly, no black performer had single-handedly presented such an armageddon-like vision before and that in itself is enough to place it alongside such genre-defining recorded masterworks as Like A Rolling Stone or Good Vibrations. But the impact of this album goes well beyond that potent opening track, with each subsequent track revealing another side to Mayfield's virtuosity. Most people are familiar with the jazz-inspired workout of Move On Up and it's a song who's positive message reveals more of itself upon each subsequent listen. Then there's the sublime The Makings of You, one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, with a sweeping arrangement the likes of which had scarcely been used in such a context by a black popular musician before. Add to those other major statements in the form of Wild and Free, We People Who Are Darker Than Blue and Give It Up and you end up with one of the finest, most consistent, mature and influential albums ever made.To think that Curtis would churn out three subsequent albums that were at least the equal of this one is extraordinary and is enough to put him right at the head of the queue when it comes time to re-count just who were popular music's real innovators. An absolutely essential album.
I agree with everything Ben Peach has said.I bought the album around September 1970. Not sure why. Whilst I was devoted to soul, jazz, funk already as an 18year-old Birmingham lad I was not a particular fan of The Impressions. I think I must have heard Move On Up as a single. But the whole album, every track, blew my mind in its musical scope and frankness. I distinctly remember burnin a few big ones at a friend's house, playing it over and over on a warm autumn evening, crying at some of the lyrics.Fast-forward to 1985. Moved to live and work. Pushing my older son in a pram near Finchley Road tube station, north London, a van pulls up and out jumps....Curtis Mayfield. He walked into a burger bar for a drink and food. I waited outside and moved to shake his hand. He reeled back at first, presumably thinking I was gonna mug him. But I just shook his hand and thanked him for making such wonderful music.
