Modern Jazz: A Collection of Seattle's Finest Jazz. A nice compilation of the lighter and somewhat more mainstream end of the Origin label's growing catalog of Seattle jazzers. With a number of artists represented, the mainstay of the album is a focus with something of a modern bent. There are aspects of post-bop to be heard, and slight references to the third stream set, but far and away, the bulk of the material is based in contemporary instrumental jazz. The piano plays heavily in all or most of the works, using local Seattle (and beyond) notables such as Marc Seales, Clay Giberson, and Whitney Ashe.

A new compilation called J-Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 portrays that extended decade in a country where, in the wake of post-World War II American occupation, the jazz community grew enormously. In particular, J-Jazz highlights independent releases never before issued outside Japan, mostly by artists who haven’t seen much international attention.
The Top Ten. 1 Miles Davis Miles Dewey Davis III was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. Their album "Romantic Warrior" is jazz fusion at its finest. 37 The Modern Jazz Quartet. 38 Robbie Williams Robert Peter Williams is an English singer, songwriter and actor. He was a member of the pop group Take That from 1990 to 1995 and again from 2009 to 2012. Snarky puppy is a collection of incredible jazz performers who make even more incredible music. Their most recent album We like it Here has a whole list of amazing funk jazz songs that will make you sing hallelujah! They’ve been around forever but somehow they just keep getting better and sound like a choir and DJ came together and made a bunch of freaky babies who know how to rock.
But J Jazz avoids the clangers and is composed entirely of the good stuff. Compiled by British collectors Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, the album spans cosmic jazz, abstraction and on-fire dancefloor fusion by artists whose names are generally only known to niche listeners. A running thread through the tracks is the ramped-up drive of the drummers and the bassists (which compensates for the longueurs of soloists whose enthusiasm occasionally runs away with them).
King, Little Johnny Taylor, Junior Wells and Lightnin’ Hopkins got their hipper numbers alongside the soul jazz of Booker T and Johnny Gilliam and some Latin barrio grooves from the Brown Brothers Of Soul. The mod cognoscenti may have been getting edgy about the next abuse of artistic licence as suede-booted jazzer Dean Rudland was seconded to join me in a compiling partnership for the coming Even Mo’ Mod Jazz. Sanity was restored with artists of the ilk of Lou Donaldson and Count Basie. Meanwhile, for those who can’t wait, the coloured vinyl double album version of the original Mod Jazz comp features that great Cal Tjader shot in a glorious gatefold package.
