Maw: Life Studies (1978). Now reissued alongside Marriner’s later recording with the Philharmonia of Richard Rodney Bennett’s cantata Spells, on texts by Kathleen Raine, Nicholas Maw’s set of eight studies for 15 solo strings was composed for ASMF, who gave the first performance of these unashamedly neo-romantic pieces in 1973. Così fan Tutte (1990). Neville Marriner/Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte (1990). Marriner made relatively few complete opera recordings, but in the 1980s he did record a Mozart cycle for Philips
Sir Richard Rodney Bennett CBE (29 March 1936 – 24 December 2012) was an English composer of film, TV and concert music, and also a jazz pianist Contents. 3 Film and television scores. Despite his early studies in modernist techniques, Bennett's tastes were catholic. He wrote in a wide range of styles, including jazz, for which he had a particular fondness. Early on, he began to write music for feature films. 1979 Spells, Aubade – Jane Manning, Philharmonia Orchestra, David Willcocks, David Atherton (Argo). 1995 Partita, Four Jazz Songs, Enchanted April Suite – Britten Sinfonia, Nicholas Cleobury, the composer, Neil Richardson (BBC). 1996 Diversions, Symphony No. 3, Concerto for Violin and Orchestra – Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, James DePreist (Koch).
Thus, in Nicholas Maw and Richard Rodney Bennett’s 70th-birthday year reappear these 1978 versions of two impressive pieces. Maw’s Life Studies reminds us of his former status as the natural inheritor of the legacy of Tippett and Britten, the music luscious but vigorous, and beautifully played by ASMF. Bennett’s Spells is, by comparison, diffuse; but, as late-20th-century British oratorios go, it’s an imaginative piece, and Manning, the Bach Choir and the Philharmonia do it proud.
