A new compilation called J-Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz From Japan 1969-1984 portrays that extended decade in a country where, in the wake of post-World War II American occupation, the jazz community grew enormously. In particular, J-Jazz highlights independent releases never before issued outside Japan, mostly by artists who haven’t seen much international attention.

It is a label of "various artists" projects, but what sets it apart from other labels that produce compilations of music is that Putumayo compilations are well off even the road less travelled. First of all, the label compiles not so much songs by artists, but music that provides a glimpse of a cultural ethos. Secondly, Putumayo has designed the "musical-cultural" encounters to be almost like a meaningful huddle in a local café

South African jazz is hard to define. It has taken on various forms over time, constantly reflecting the state of South African society. The development of South African jazz can thus be seen to have stages that mirror South Africa’s history. The genre of South African jazz therefore creates a complex continuity between the ‘born-free’ contemporary jazz artists of today and the legendary artists that were active during the struggle against apartheid, whether in exile or within country. The Roots of South African Jazz

South Africa’s jazz history is nearly as old as America’s, with jazz-influenced performing emerging in urban centers like Johannesburg in the early 20th century. Featuring a big band tradition and a variety of regional styles, South African jazz has a unique set of standards and a rich array of innovators, many of whom harnessed jazz in the battle against South Africa’s apartheid system. Both a young Hugh Masekela and a young Dollar Brand (later Abdullah Ibrahim) served in the group, alongside trombonist Jonas Gwangwa, bassist Johnny Gertze, and drummer Makhaya Ntshoko. At the center and heart of it, though, is altoist Kippie Moeketsi, the godfather of South Africa’s modern Jazz scene, and the mentor to many of these artists. His solos on this album of original works, particularly Scullery Department, rank among some of the greatest put to record.
