In 1960, 27-year-old Quincy Jones and his 18-piece all-star jazz orchestra were stranded in Europe when a show they were accompanying failed. A last-minute tour with Nat King Cole rescued them. This marvellous concert, recorded by Swiss radio and now released for the first time, comes as a revelation. As well as proving that Quincy's was a world-class band, it demonstrates that Nat had not given up seriously playing the piano, as was commonly believed. As he reveals in the interview that closes this CD, it was showbiz pressure that made him concentrate on singing

Recently discovered 1960 concert recording of Nat King Cole with Quincy Jones and His Big Band, from the archives of Swiss Radio. What has remained underappreciated though, certainly among popular music fans, is that Nat was also an incredible jazz musician. This is the first 'official' release of Cole's broadcast with the Jones orchestra in 1960, and with great playing and empathy, it's good to have it in Swiss Radio's usual high quality sound.

Nat King Cole with Quincy Jones Big Band - Live In Paris - April 19, 1960 - Radio France FIP –. Much as I like to rely on my own archives to offer those unique and historic recordings on Past Daily, I run across something from someplace else that stops me in my tracks. This historic pairing of Nat King Cole and Quincy Jones is from 2 concerts the pair did in Paris in April of 1960. Okay - all that said; Here is that concert, part of a European tour Cole and Jones embarked on as a way of reaffirming Cole’s European audiences with his Jazz roots. From the early 1950s on, Nat King Cole had recorded several songs which became enormous hits for him in the Pop field. Subsequently, many of his loyal fans going back to the 1940s were dismayed at this new turn in direction for him, and many felt he had abandoned his roots.
