Caetano Emanuel Viana Telles Veloso (Portuguese pronunciation: ; born August 7, 1942) is a Brazilian composer, singer, guitarist, writer, and political activist. Veloso first became known for his participation in the Brazilian musical movement Tropicalismo, which encompassed theatre, poetry and music in the 1960s, at the beginning of the Brazilian military dictatorship

A true heavyweight, Caetano Veloso is a pop ker/political activist whose stature in the pantheon of international pop musicians is on par with that of Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, and Lennon/McCartney. And even the most cursory listen to his recorded output since the 1960s proves that this is no exaggeration. Born in 1942 in Santo Amaro da Purificacao in Brazil's Bahia region, Veloso absorbed the rich Bahian musical heritage that was influenced by Caribbean, African, and North American pop music, but it was the cool, seductive bossa nova sound of Jo+úo Gilberto.

Caetano Veloso is the debut solo album by the artist of the same name, released in Brazil in 1968. He had released Domingo the year before in collaboration with Gal Costa.

Caetano Veloso is the third self-titled album by Caetano Veloso. It was recorded in England, when the artist was in an exile imposed by the Brazilian government of the time for being subversive. It is mostly sung in English, differing a lot from his previous albums. It has a sad tone throughout it, reflecting his feelings about being far from his home country, his family and friends. It was released first in Europe, and then in Brazil, in 1971. From the album booklet: Caetano Veloso was a superstar in Brazil. He came to England and decided to make London his home in the summer of 1969.
