Though he never released an album as a bandleader, his recorded legacy stands to this day as some of the most exciting, and entertaining, in the jazz guitar library. Charlie Christian was the first successful electric guitarist and although he played in swing bands mostly, he was very much influenced by bebop players.

In conjunction with documentary filmmaker Ken Burns' ten-part 2000 PBS special, Columbia/Legacy and Verve teamed up to issue a special series of reissues covering much of the history of 20th century jazz. What's here is a very good range of classic jazz from throughout the decades, touching upon performances, many acknowledged classics, from many of the music's giants: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, and up to Wynton Marsalis and Cassandra Wilson.

Pre-1950's Jazz History. House are often hailed as the birth of bebop. The recordings captured by jazz buff Jerry Newman include some of Charlie's most energetic and imaginative playing. Incidentally, despite misleading liner notes and releases, Thelonious Monk did not play with Charlie on any of the recorded sessions. Nor did Charlie play on "Kerouac.

The beginnings of jazz guitar style can be traced all the way back to the early decades of the 20th century. Back then, the guitar was used strictly as somewhat of a backing instrument in bigger jazz bands. The instrument’s primary use most often consisted of providing the rhythmical background to brass instruments such as the saxophone or a clarinet. The specific playing style included basic chord strumming in an expressively rhythmical manner. It was the genre’s early days when the first prominent jazz guitar was first produced. Throughout the genre’s history, whether it was the early days or the later pop influenced phases, jazz guitar always had its distinctive elements that made it immediately recognizable to the listener. There was always the odd-rhythm timing that was successfully implemented even within the straight-groove, 4/4 timing tunes.
