On all counts Meyer's ensemble surpasses the previous recordings I've heard, even the excellent one form the Orpheus Chamber Orch. on DG. Here the playing is light, refreshing, constantly unfolding new colors. Mozart has nothing to fear; none of Strauss's music is first water, but it's delightful as party time. What this reading accomplishes with "Cheerful Workshop" is especially revealing' it is rescued from limbo. The Dvorak Wind Serenade, on the other hand, suffers form over familiarity and a certain cloying quality in the music's unrelenting tunefulness. Meyer, happily, delivers a poised reading that is so alive, it erases any ennui one might feel. The excellence of ensemble certainly helps, as it does throughout this program.

Wind ensembles (also known as 'concert bands', 'symphonic bands', 'wind orchestras', etc) are performing groups consisting mainly of woodwinds and/or brass instruments. Commonly associated with communal institutions -or the military- concert bands perform repertoires including original music, transcriptions of popular tunes, and light pieces. Marching bands feature a similar instrumentation, though they differ in that their purpose is to play music while marching, instead of functioning as a concert ensemble. Wind Ensemble's top 10 list.

The Eastman Wind Ensemble is an American concert band founded by Frederick Fennell at the Eastman School of Music in 1952. Through the group, Fennell redefined wind ensemble to refer to a specific kind of wind band with only one player per part, and focusing on original wind music rather than orchestral transcriptions. The Eastman Wind Ensemble has premiered over 150 works, including works by composers Bernard Rands and Joseph Schwantner.
