Arguably darker and more experimental than Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head features more of what made Coldplay interesting in the beginning, but it also embellishes that image with better production quality and more memorable tracks.

Despite the troubles that preceded it, A Rush of Blood to the Head reveals a more confident and once-again beautifully-crafted sound. There simply isn't a good track on here - because every single one is great, if not excellent. With tracks like "Politik," and "Amsterdam," this album is deservedly the favourite of many-a-fan, but for me, it is beaten ever-so-slightly by the next two follow-ups, although it certainly has more merit musically than X & Y. Those looking to get into Coldplay should start here, however, because this is damn near perfect, for all the criticism leveled at the band by certain snobbish music fans.

In terms of musicianship, “A Rush of Blood To The Head” is a very much stronger and improved version of its debut “Parachute”. Mellow? Hell, no! I would say that it is melodic, so it is hard to refer it as mellow or cheesy stuff. At the same time, most of the songwriting provided by bandleader Chris Martin, takes the listener to a mood-changing trip ranging from darker lyrics to optimistic, hopeful ones (In My Place, God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, The Scientist, and Warning Sign can easily be good examples of this statement). Even though Coldplay is not a life-changing, innovative, hard rocking band, it has at least good musicianship that is pretty hard to find on most of today´s modern rock bands. Fans of U2 and Radiohead are prone to take this stuff a chance.

There is not a bad track on this album! It starts out in outer space and ends with a man at the end of his rope who is desperate for and eventually finds love. "AROBTTH" tells a beautiful story with the boys at the peek of their songwriting abilities. Not to say that we wouldn't get deep and enjoyable work from them after this album. That said, I do believe this to be their masterwork. And, as it is the masterpiece of what I consider to be my favorite band, it is thus my all time favorite album.Favorite:PolitikIn My PlaceGod Put a Smile Upon Your FaceThe ScientistClocksWarning SignA Rush of Blood to the HeadAmsterdamLeast Favorite:If I had to pick... It's perfect, nothing else to add. while another bands only highlight with the debut, Coldplay knows how to improve to make a perfect product.

Hard to genuinely like this smooth, but not terribly impactful MOR/radio singles album. Why? Well - at basis the band has music to offer, they specialize in melodies, and harmonic contrast, like the Beatles, only the lyrics never genuinely grab the listeners attention, worse yet the only member of the band with real personality is Chris Martin, and the problem with Coldplay has always been that Chris Martin is so utterly average and faceless. The best I can say about the album is that it's moved on from the Jeff Buckley/British pub rock sounds of the first album, but what bothers me is that Martin's emoting only really serves the listenability of the track - if he has an earnest message, or experience to share, he certainly doesn't offer it in the recorded music of Coldplay. That said, you could argue that music is just entertainment; it's either well played or it isn't - the problem is that Coldplay exists in that vein of earnest, meaningful melodic rock groups (U2, Radiohead etc) but have no real depth, no real personality. Clocks, for instance, is one of the most vapid, pattern based, lyrically empty tracks I've heard in years - seriously, the tune makes Phil Collins sound like a worthwhile alternative for the bland sound system playlists in shopping malls.
