Track: LTD (Long Tall Dexter) (Dexter Gordon) Album: George Cables Trio - A Letter To Dexter Artists: George Cables (Piano) Rufus Reid (Bass) Victor Lewis.
George Cables is one of the great jazz pianists and is often overlooked. His playing on this record is assured as always, full of flourish and replete with feeling. Great drums and bass backup from other Dexter Gordon alumni. Rufus Reid is solid yet inventive and Victor Lewis adds a dash of colour and polish to the ensemble. Assured performances all around - great choice of material played masterfully. Reply Notify me Helpful.
2006 studio album by George Cables. Studio album by. George Cables. Cables has a decorous and romantic playing style, and combined with a rhythm section as mighty as this one, the results should be magnificent. And so they are, at least most of the time. Meanwhile, A Letter To Dexter celebrates another saxophonist, Dexter Gordon, with whom Cables gigged and recorded a little from 1977-79. As is to be hoped with such a fine trio of musicians-each of whom played with Gordon, bassist Rufus Reid doing so contemporaneously with Cables-the music is sinewy, lyrical and infectiously good-time, like Gordon himself. Indeed, there are moments when your mind wanders and you half expect Gordon himself to join in. Gordon's playlist was focused on standards, but he also wrote some enduring tunes of his own, and Cables includes four of these on the album. The other tracks are standards, and one.
Pianist George Cables, who spent some of his formative years accompanying saxophone great Dexter Gordon, pays tribute to the man with a nicely varied collection of tunes written by or associated with Gordon, A Letter to Dexter. His trio is filled out by fellow Gordon alumni Rufus Reid on bass and drummer Victor Lewis, both of them now giants in their own right. Unfortunately, there are occasional moments when.
