Surely, Times New Viking, a trio of art-school grads and Guided By Voices disciples, would clean up their act. They didn't. Their first LP as indie rock big leaguers, Rip It Off, opened with "Teen Drama", a song whose every bar was so distorted, ill-tempered, and flat-out mean, it would have been almost too aggressive to try matching it as the record progressed. That's because Dancer Equired also features some truly great moments as well. While neither Murphy nor drummer Adam Elliott are particularly strong vocalists, they've never needed to be up until now. "No Room to Live" boasts both a terrific melody and the kind of harmonic streamlining that's forgotten in most corners of the record.
The way Dancer Equired ends is creating new content to me even now, after I’ve listened to it so many times. And I’m not talking about subtle content, stuff I’m finding with each new listen; "No Good" is a pretty vacuous song, under two minutes with a detuned acoustic guitar strummed and a voice distorted like it’s underwater. But in spite of its loudness, and its relative clarity to the rest of the album, it’s only now I’ve noticed that lyric, Beth Murphy yelping but there is one thing that you can do, actually existing. Seeking a universe where Times New Viking’s album is the same to everyone is a fucking hilarious notion. It simply does not exist, and these songs cannot be conflated into some collective consciousness that goes into them with the same intentions and indie rock ideals.
While you couldn’t exactly call this fifth album by Columbus, Ohio trio Times New Viking a reinvention or rebirth, there is a salient difference between this effort and its predecessors – mainly, on Dancer Equired, you can actually hear the songs.
Listen to Dancer Equired by Times New Viking - a new album (release date: April 26, 2011) @ New Releases No. Dancer Equired is a new chapter, sure to attract an entirely new audience of intrigued listeners while keeping old Times New Viking fans perfectly satiated by not abandoning those early ideals. Rip it up and start again. Artist Site Released: April 26, 2011 ON Merge.
While Dancer Equired boasts improved fidelity, Times New Viking makes sure not to shape up too much; the songs casually meander toward tunefulness, with wiry guitar riffs stumbling over fumbling drums and flat-footed boy-girl harmonies.
However, Dancer Equired is probably the most transparent the band has ever sounded. The guitars and vocal channels sail by without any ruptured signals, but they still sound charmingly fragile. It’s the first time the band has sequestered themselves away in a studio, and the time away has seemingly allowed them to focus more on the melodies than the texture. Times New Viking’s earlier, more DIY-minded efforts blaze by with such potent vitality; it was hard to grasp the individual components of the album. Most of them sound like a compressed, caffeinated garage jam, which certainly has its place but doesn’t usually allow for a jumping-off point. But the Equired songs slow down, shift tempo, tell stories, and occasionally fade out - coming together like a much more traditional sounding rock record with an evolving pace and discernable peaks.
