Showtime is the seventh studio album by American musician James Brown. The album was released in April 1964, by Smash Records. It was the transition album from King Records to Smash Records, however, handicapped by contractual obligations with King Records, Brown released an album of remakes overdubbed with canned applause.

The best showman and one of the most influential singers of the 20th century, who transformed R&B into funk with his tight, driving style.

100 Greatest Soul Albums. Criteria: Soul music started in the early 1960s and was around into the 1970s and later, although by the mid-1970s it had pretty much been replaced by funk and disco. Albums that are mainly funk or disco, rather than soul, were not considered for this list. These albums were chosen and ranked based on their initial and lasting popularity, influence, impact, and overall stature in soul music circles. Last Updated: 2016-12-17. The Godfather of Soul. Soul Brother No. 1. Hardest-working man in show business. James Brown was all that and more during a six-decade career that influenced the advent of funk and brought black pride into the musical conversation. Brown’s gritty, street-edged vocals - a cross between singing and talking - also laid the foundation for rap/hip-hop. And his high-energy concerts, capped by his dizzying dance moves and infamous cape routine, set the tone for Michael Jackson, among others.

Soul and R&B encompasses much of non-sacred African American music. Its reach spans from the early vocal hits by Sam & Dave, to Ray Charles, to the Delfonics and Al Green and all the way to the modern R&B of Beyonce and Usher. The category is united by emotive vocals, hints of funk and, of course, ample doses of pure, impassioned soul.
