Herbert von Karajan (German: ; born Heribert Ritter von Karajan; 5 April 1908 – 16 July 1989) was an Austrian conductor. He was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. Generally regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, he was a dominant figure in European classical music from the mid-1950s until his death.

Since his death, the charismatic Austrian artist has continued to inspire countless music-lovers worldwide through his monumental legacy of recordings, whose depth and richness are now celebrated in the largest box set ever issued: Karajan – Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon and Decca. Deutsche Grammophon released Karajan’s debut recording, the overture to Die Zauberflöte with the Berlin Staatskapelle, in 1939. Karajan became Principal Conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1955 and held the position for the rest of his life.
