On their debut album "Kühe In 1/2 Trauer" (Selektion, 1982) they managed to fuse the playful irrationality of dadaism and the oppressive tones of expressionism. Roger Schönauer and Ewald Weber focused on an austere art and technique of loop and tape manipulation.

D4 existed from 1980 to 1988 as a continuously working group. The only permanent member was Ralf Wehowsky (RLW). Since 1992, RLW works under own name. All the tracks of Tionchor had appeared on different compilations. They were restored and compiled during 1986 for Tionchor which was released II/1987 as . Three bonus tracks and the complete discography have been added for this CD reissue.

D4 was a German electronic noise music collective, active primarily from 1980 to 1988. 4 embraced tape cut-ups, musique concrète, endless recycling and transformation of previously published material, and many long-distance collaborations with like-minded artists such as DDAA, Vortex Campaign, Nurse With Wound, and Merzbow. Ralf Wehowsky, the only constant member of the group, later released solo material under. Tionchor (Selektion) - 1982-1986. Acrid Acme (Of) P1. 4 (Selektion) - 1986-1988. Nichts Niemand Nirgends Nie! (Nothing Nobody Nowhere Never!) P1. Primary Artist, Composer.

On their debut album Kuhe In 1/2 Trauer (Selektion, 1982) they managed to fuse the playful irrationality of dadaism and the oppressive tones of expressionism. Ralf Wehowsky, Roger Schonauer and Ewald Weber focused on an austere art and technique of loop and tape manipulation. Tionchor (Sonoris, 1987) collects revised rarities, and is probably their most successful albums, precisely because it offers a variety of ideas instead of an obsessive analysis of one idea. D4: "Kühe In 1/2 Trauer" (via SoundCloud). Passagen brings up another, more intriguing side to the box set conundrum. Even if your box-set is necessary, how do you contain an artist who can't fit inside a box, metaphorically? It's hard to think of a group for whom this is more true, at least in the realm of experimental sound, than P1. That quick sketch is less a reductive picture of P1. 4 than a launching point toward further mystery. Because it turns out each release contains a web of associations and distinctions that call into question what an "original" P1. 4 release might be. Much of the source material chopped up on Kühe comes from previous releases by PD. Distruct does the same with recordings the group requested from its comrades in the international cassette underground, such as Nurse With Wound and DDDA.
