Sepultura experienced a major loss when former lead singer Max Cavalera left to form Soulfly in 1996, but thankfully, Derrick Green proved to be a highly capable replacement. If 1998's mildly uneven Against - Sepultura's first album with Green - found the band struggling with the transition, Green was filling Cavalera's shoes much more confidently on 2001's Nation. And if there are still any lingering doubts about the Green/Sepultura match, 2003's excellent Roorback should put them to rest for good.

Roorback finds Sepultura making their Metalcore as always, tuning their guitars even lower (down to A). The low tuning, together with the extreme precision of Andreas Kisser gives the album plenty of depth despite sounding formulaic. Ultimately, no songs stick out (“Bottomed Out” features excellent verses, but a highly disappointing pseudo-violent chorus), but the non-excessive aggressiveness, the occasional musical dexterity and its conciseness, along with a strong, a bit flaccid sound, make Roorback one of the band’s best and most consistent albums. Listeners should however be warned that an expanded issue includes an outro (mere 11 minutes of talking and silence) and an enigmatic cover of U2’s “Bullet the Blue Sky”.Highlights: “As It Is”, “The Rift”.
