28 May at 15:01 ·. Come to South Wales and say hello! I'll be with the good people at the Camp Elsewhere Festival on the 15th of June. I'll be playing a solo set and DJing all the best country soul tunes. See you there! See all.

Three-plus-years in the making, Country Hustle began after the songwriter received an invite to London from Andrew Hale (Sade's keyboardist and co-writer). Nichols came down from Wales on numerous occasions as his time permitted. The pair roped in Ben Lamdin, Distance, St. Francis Hotel, and others to participate.

Somewhere around the 13th+ album from this London-based musical enigma: The cover shows a middle-aged man in a cowboy hat labeled with the title “Country Hustle”. The last thing you might expect is a Luther Vandross cover, but you get one! Though spotted with bits of country, this is an album driven mostly by a smooth & shadowy roots-meets-trip-pop shuffle beat and swampy, funk-deep voodoo rhythms attached to slow, bluesy waves of haunted reggae/soul. Something like a mix of Dr. Johh, Shriekback, Mark Knopfler, Peter Tosh, Spiritualized, J.J. Cale, Nick Drake, Junior Kimbrough. “Country Hustle” is a weird one. It slides into a cool groove that you don’t expect, and it doesn’t take long to lock onto the ride. Recommended.
This recording is a joy, easily could be your best 2017 discovery (so far) and a delightful genre expanding package. The first 5 songs groove along and then the stew gets spicy. Everytime I have played it end to end the song selections, build and style, paint a party in my head. Maybe a modern update of JJ Cale meets Ian Dury meets ???.
