Cabaret is another area. Ute Lemper, the most potent cabaret artist on earth, could be forgiven for thinking she has sung a lifetime's worth of Weill/Brecht, Kander/Ebb, Brel and Piaf, despite having leavened the journey with Piazzolla, Waits and Cave. She could be forgiven for trying to pen her own; even be forgiven when they were not in the Weill/Brel class, because in concert they were book-ended by masterpieces, and she was so extraordinary, anyway.
Cabaret is another area. With Forever Lemper, the queen of interpreters, finally proves herself as a composer. She has taken the love poems of the late Chilean Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda and let them unfold organically through music.
Songs by Lemper and Nisinman. Steinway and Sons 30020. From the evidence of this collection of Neruda settings, Ute Lemper’s skills as a songwriter are as dubious as her talents as a singer. She has written this material in collaboration with the bandoneon player and composer Marcelo Nisinman; even though he gets distinctly lower billing in the collaboration, a cynical listener might surmise that it is he who has given the music its professional gloss. But even so, none of it is especially interesting.

Brisbane Festival: Ute Lemper's new song cycle of the Chilean poet's poems is followed by a crowd-pleasing romp through the best of cabaret. There is an odd tension in this double bill from Ute Lemper, in which a new song cycle of Pablo Neruda's love poetry is followed by a slick rendition of Weimar tunes. It's as though you're getting two shows stuck together: the one Lemper wanted to bring on the road, and the one she felt she had to. Not that the second half of the evening, in which Lemper sings Kurt Weil and Jacques Brel is in any way workmanlike.
All 12 songs on the album are written by Ute Lemper. With collaborations by Marcelo Nisinman. these are the last lines I will write for her") as it feels very personal to m. - Ute Lemper, 2013.
