Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten OM CH (22 November 1913 – 4 December 1976) was an English composer, conductor and pianist. He was a central figure of 20th-century British classical music, with a range of works including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces. His best-known works include the opera Peter Grimes (1945), the War Requiem (1962) and the orchestral showpiece The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra (1945).

Our Hunting Fathers (1936, song cycle written for Benjamin Britten). September 1, 1939 Funeral Blues The Shield of Achilles Horae Canonicae For the Time Being. Heather Harper, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bernard Haitink (LPO). More recently, a live concert performance of Britten's Our Hunting Fathers has been issued on the London Philharmonic Orchestra's own label. Les Illuminations (Britten). Ian Charles Bostridge. Ian Bostridge, Britten Sinfonia, Daniel Harding (EMI Classics) OCLC 43271701. Winterreise Wigmore Hall Westminster School Aldeburgh Festival Julius Drake.

Our Hunting Fathers still sounds modern and fresh off the page, a mere 77 years after its premiere, and set Britten’s stall out as a composer who will not be backed into a stylistic corner. Recordings used Elisabeth Söderström, Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera, Richard Armstrong (EMI) Heather Harper (soprano), London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bernard Haitink (LPO) Phyllis Bryn-Julson (soprano), English Chamber Orchestra, Steuart Bedford Peter Pears (tenor), London Symphony Orchestra, Benjamin Britten (Decca) Ian Bostridge (tenor), Britten Sinfonia, Daniel Harding (EMI).

Les Illuminations (The Illuminations), Op. 18, is a song cycle by Benjamin Britten, first performed in 1940. It is composed for soprano or tenor soloist and string orchestra, and sets verse and prose poems written in 1872–1873 by Arthur Rimbaud, part of his collection Les Illuminations. Britten began writing the cycle in Suffolk in March 1939 and completed it a few months later in the United States. It was the first of his song cycles to gain widespread popularity

Les Illuminations, Op. 18: IV. Royaute. Our Hunting Fathers, Op. 8: Epilogue and a Funeral March. 8: Rats Away! 04:24.

In that work and in the wonderful Our Hunting Fathers, arguably Britten's first masterpiece, the orchestral playing under Bedford has exactly the right raw urgency. All that's lacking in Our Hunting Fathers is a bit more theatricality in the singing of Phyllis Bryn-Julson, to give the right bite and pungency to WH Auden's savagely satirical texts.

Heather Harper sop, ECO, Steuart Bedford cond. symphonic cycle for high voice and orchestra 13 May–23 July 1936; revised: 1961 Text devised by W. H. Auden.
