Roger Miller was a rarity: a musician who was as distinctive a singer as he was a songwriter. This was true back in his heyday in the 1950s and '60s, when the country charts were full of songs he had written, but these songs endured: Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn both had hits with Miller tunes in the '90s ("Tall, Tall Trees" and "Husbands and Wives," respectively). Certainly, King of the Road is an eclectic listen, one that is indeed anchored with country and Americana acts but features a bunch of rockers, both old and new.

Learn more about Roger Miller & Various. I would sit and listen intently for hours, but one song by one artist in particular truly perplexed my fragile young psyche. The song was You Don't Want My Love (In The Summertime) and whenever the singer would start scatting the solo, sounding completely incoherent, going into a falsetto punctuated by sounds resembling Donald Duck, I just didn't know what to think  . King of the Road" is a song written and originally recorded in November 1964 by country singer Roger Miller. The lyrics tell of the day-to-day life of a vagabond hobo who, despite being poor (a "man of means by no means"), revels in his freedom, describing himself humorously as the "king of the road". It was Miller's fifth single for Smash Records. The popular crossover record hit No. 1 on the US Country chart, No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and No. 1 on the Easy Listening surveys
