Primarily a tenor saxophonist, he also plays soprano sax, clarinet and even a little keyboard for this 2006 small group session with bassist Scott Lee and drummer Jeff Hirschfield. Rathburn and Lee each contributed five compositions, with a pair of arrangements of works by others rounding out the date. Veteran tenor saxophonist George Garzone is a guest on five tracks, including an explosive rendition of Joe Lovano's "Street Talk" and the leader's whirling, Herbie Nichols-like "Scatter Scott.

Shadow Forms II (Wednesday) A handful of years ago the multireedist Andrew Rathbun released Shadow Forms (Steeplechase), a compellingly straightforward album showcasing his rapport with his saxophone elder George Garzone, the drummer Jeff Hirshfield and the bassist Scott Lee. When Andrew Rathbun takes on the poetry of Margaret Atwood, he gives it a new, and deserving, testament. Rathbun studied the work of the celebrated Canadian writer in school. Here he uses two of her lesser-known works, "True Stories" and "Bluejays", bringing in Luciana Souza to give voice to the words. She articulates with distinct feeling, dipping into the nuances of the poems and bringing the words to life. While she is generally a straight-ahead singer she does delve, all too briefly, into scatting an intro. Jeff Scott Soto (born November 4, 1965) is an American rock singer of Puerto Rican descent. He is best known for being the vocalist on Yngwie Malmsteen's first two albums, and (briefly) the lead vocalist for Journey in 2006-2007. He also had a long tenure as the frontman of hard rock band Talisman. Currently he works as solo artist, with his self-named band SOTO and as the vocalist of supergroups .
