Typical of Wurman's low-key approach, the track "The Harshest Place on Earth" is anything but harsh. It's a lullaby predictably punctuated by piano and flute-the go-to instruments when Hollywood composers want to evoke feel-good uplift. There's a lot of drama in March of the Penguins, but little has made it onto this CD. - -Elisabeth Vincentelli. Sample this album Artist (Sample).

March of the Penguins" is the story of a colony of Emperor Penguins who follow the circle of life, as they leave the sea in sub-zero temperatures to travel 70 miles across the frozen wasteland to procreate. This engrossing documentary film was shot by a French crew during 14 gruelling months in Antartica.

March of the Penguins" recounts the stunning 70-mile journey of Antarctica's emperor penguins across the icy terrain to a mating ground where new life is created under the most horrific conditions. One of the film's more striking images - and one that has galvanized much debate in the "culture wars" - is the mother penguins passing their fertilized eggs to their mates, who protect them for months on end while the females return to the water to feed themselves and ultimately their new babies. Some conservatives have interpreted the film as a testament to family. A lot of the score relates to the stillness," notes Wurman. I tried to embrace the pace of the penguins' lives musically. Some of the sounds are minimalist: when the penguins are mating, for example.
