Anorexia Nervosa - Primary Artist
As with most of "Symphonic Black Metal" powerhouses that rose in the wake of Dimmu Borgir and Hecate Enthroned, Anorexia Nervosa maybe were tempted to make their music "darker, faster, heavier" (as the famous Cradle of Filth epithet says): in other words, listeners should expect an album almost interchangeable from Drudenhaus, right from the luxurious and apocalyptic instrumentation and songwriting (which transforms every single song into a series of Armageddons on Earth), the dramatic keyboards (now used more swiftly), B tuned guitars, relentless Death/Thrash Metal riffing and hidden ecstatic guitar/bass harmonies.Being the French Cradle of Filth may have had a not-indifferent burden for Anorexia Nervosa, as if they had to replicate every trick the British band had put into the market with another. The band had to replicate them even lyrically, trying to be as more shocking as possible (samples from some lyrics: “Make love with chaos, once in a lifetime”, “Tu es la putain des faiblesses humaines / Tiede et obscene / Aveuglée par ce desir suintant de vanité / Sans valeur | You are the whore of the human weaknesses / Lukewarm and obscene / Blinded by this oozing desire of vanity / Without value”, “Human nature vomited with anger / By the holy avenger / Blessed be the martyrs of virtue / Jesus was impure / Here she comes lying on the white wedding couch / I mortify myself, curse thee a thousand times”). The songs are so confused and dizzying that one can easily be lost beyond the sonic maelstrom as he was listening to a Meshuggah album. And though this band isn’t unlistenable as the Swedish band, there are frequent times when they come very close to be like it. At the end of the day, New Obscurantis Order flows from song to song offering nothing distinctive as “A Doleful Night in Telema”, and considering their pandemonic sound and way of working, that’s a terrible weak point when describing their approach. So early in their career, Anorexia Nervosa were already close to the point of stagnating.Highlights: “Châtiment de la Rose”.
