OFFENBACH: Orphee aux enfers (PAL) Jacques Offenbach ORPHÉE AUX ENFERS Orpheus - Alexandru Badea Eurycide - Elizabeth Vidal Jupiter . Théâtre de la Monnaie Chorus Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic Orchestra Théâtre de la Monnaie Symphony Orchestra Patrick Davin, conductor. Herbert Wernicke, stage director, set and costume design.
Only 2 left in stock (more on the way). JACQUES OFFENBACH'S ORPHÉE AUX ENFERS (ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD) a production by the Opéra National de Lyon, ArtHaus Music, 2009.
The burlesque – conducted by Patrick Davin – is situated in a famous fin de siècle café and with a stupendous coup de théâtre the ensemble makes its entry into hell in a steam locomotive, which crashes through the ceiling. Elizabeth Vidal and Alexandru Badea in the main roles are supported energetically by the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and Offenbach’s famous can-can is, as ever, an intoxicating highlight. In Offenbach’s light and elegant comedy based on the Greek legend of Orpheus – a veiled satire on Napoleon III’s régime – a dissolute bunch of gods, bored with the cushioned. This finely-focused and witty production of Jacques Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers with sets, costumes and lighting by the director Herbert Wernicke, is a visual and musical delight.
Conductor – Patrick Davin. Film Director – Dirk Gryspeirt. Orchestra – Symphony Orchestra Of The Théâtre De La Monnaie. Other – Caroline Cornelis, Pascale Mouteau, Sylvia Printemps.

Offenbach: Orphee aux enfers. 20 January 2012 - 4:54pm. Submitted by root admin. Album title: Offenbach. Composer(s): Offenbach. Works: Orphee aux enfers. Performer: Badea, Vidal, Duesing; Theatre de la Monnaie Chorus & Orchestra/Patrick Davin; dir. Herbert Wernicke (La Monnaie, Brussels, 1997). The sluggish conductor is Patrick Davin, but at least his approach matches the humour, which has all the lightness of a lead meringue. This is supposed to be a comic operetta, nein?. There are only subtitles on the disc itself, though some useful articles feature in the booklet, even if the word 'bourgeois' seems to be something of an idee fixe.

OFFENBACH: Orphée aux Enfers. Vidal, de Callatay, Theodoridou, Meiser; Badea, Macias, Cassard, Duesing; Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of La Monnaie/De Munt, Davin. Production: Wernicke. Arthaus Musik 100 403, 120 mins. This energetic 1997 performance conveys the vitality of Orphée aux Enfers as a theater piece and, most of the time, does justice to Offenbach’s fizzy score. Under Patrick Davin’s sprightly direction, the orchestra produces polished sounds - the woodwind solos in Offenbach’s original pastoral prelude are particularly suave - but the players have a few problems with getting (or staying) together during the second scene. The videography has been handled well, save in the dimly lighted opening of the second scene, when one isn’t always sure where the voices are coming from.
