Round About Midnight is an album by jazz trumpeter Miles Davis that was released by Columbia in March 1957. At the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955, Davis performed the song "'Round Midnight" as part of an all-star jam session, with the song's composer Thelonious Monk, along with Connie Kay and Percy Heath of the Modern Jazz Quartet, Zoot Sims, and Gerry Mulligan. Davis's solo received a positive reception from many jazz fans and critics

Round About Midnight. Given that 'Round About Midnight was Miles Davis' debut Columbia recording, it was both a beginning and an ending. Certainly the beginning of his recording career with the label that issued most if not all of his important recordings; and the recording debut of an exciting new band that had within its ranks Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, pianist Red Garland, and an all but unknown tenor player named John Coltrane.

It was with his interpretation of ’Round Midnight in the presence of its composer Thelonious Monk at the1955 Newport Jazz Festival that Miles Davis convinced George Avakian to include him in the Columbia catalogue. Coming out of a long depression, Miles went from working with small independent record companies to a very large firm. Unlike the recordings that he still did for Rudy Van Gelder’s studio to fulfill his previous contract with Prestige, the production of his first sessions in the Columbia studio was very well planned.

Round About Midnight is one of Miles Davis' true masterpieces; it's an album of focused, passionate numbers that showcase a post-bop transformation that was taking place in the 1950's. Here, Miles is in top form with his signature trumpet, while John Coltrane adds the tenor sax. Throw in great piano by Red Garland, and what you have is relaxing, yet moving songs that remind me of lounge music at some hotel during happy hour. In a lot of ways, 'Round About Midnight is a definitive jazz album, much in the same manner as Kind of Blue

Round About Midnight is perhaps one of the most accurate representations of the quirky curiosity night time brings. Throughout the album, nostalgia-tinged pieces steep the listener in a buoyant state of mind without being overly energetic; all songs remain a light listen but impact the listener all the same. What’s more, the album is a goddamn monolith in Miles’ career. He managed to find the tender point between feel and technicality, pushing his hard bop style farther than ever before. Not only that, but the album also gave him a platform to build his first significant group; this one including familiar names such as John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Joe Jones.
