Modular/Island) UK release date: 4 June 2012. by Ben Hogwood published: 4 Jun 2012 in Albums. Far from it, as Anxiety finds Ladyhawke adding more leather to her wardrobe, donning some killer heeled boots and applying liberal doses of eyeliner. The record finds her exploring a love of Joan Jett and David Bowie, rather than the appropriations to Fleetwood Mac that were witnessed in the first, self-titled album. Immediately apparent are the grungy guitars, with an electric edge to their sound, and the punchy beats.

Ladyhawke - 'Anxiety'. Pip Brown has beaten her nerves and returned with heavier mettle. A lot’s happened since we last heard from Ladyhawke. There’s been a General Election. Plan B did the soul singer thing. Nicola Roberts released a solo album. Some genius made chocolate Philadelphia. All that and more has changed the UK’s outlook forever in the four years since New Zealander Pip Brown released her self-titled debut album. While it’s reductive to glance over what her 2008 synth-loving contemporaries are up to now, we’re going to do it anyway.

Brown's debut solo album, Ladyhawke, was released on 22 September 2008 through Modular Recordings, and topped the RIANZ Albums Chart. It spawned five singles of which "My Delirium" was the most successful. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2009, Ladyhawke won Breakthrough Artist in both album and single categories. Brown's second solo album, Anxiety, was released in May 2012, and her third solo album, Wild Things, was released on 3 June 2016.

Ladyhawke still sounds like Ladyhawke, just tougher and more muscular, like Ladyhawke after a boot camp. She's broadened her remit too. Anxiety's reference points range from the 1960s psychedelia of album opener Girl Like Me to Britpop and beyond: closing track Gone Gone Gone cribs its vocal hooks from The Dandy Warhols' 2000 hit Bohemian Like You. In between, there are power-pop gems aplenty. Sunday Drive is a wistful mix of Blondie and 1980s Fleetwood Mac.

Well, while it fails to better its predecessor, ‘Anxiety’ is a mature, personal and vulnerable release that is both a brave and natural evolution for an undoubtedly talented artist. Bottom line: There really is nothing to get anxious over, Pip. Recommended Tracks: Sunday Drive, Anxiety, Vaccine and Black White & Blue.
