Arthur Sullivan: Haddon Hall. Arthur Sullivan: Haddon Hall.

Arthur Sullivan wrote Haddon Hall, "an original light opera in three Acts," in 1892 from a libretto by Sydney Grundy. Regardless of the opinion of critics of the time, I cannot help but note that Haddon Hall is fabulous. It isn't as fine as Iolanthe or Ruddigore, but is of such an even quality that it puts most of Sullivan's other non-Gilbert collaborations to shame. I am glad I purchased this recording, even though it has certain shortcomings. Though the recorded quality is very good, the ladies' of the chorus tend to have the unnatural flute-like quality that plagues the BBC Rose of Persia. Also, the orchestra is not professional. I am sure it is far better than some of the Prince Consort's recordings, but the strings often have an edge that implies a failure to keep in time. Still, certain songs show no deficiencies ("There's no one by").

Haddon Hall is an English country house on the River Wye near Bakewell, Derbyshire, one of the seats of the Duke of Rutland. It is currently occupied by Lord Edward Manners (brother of the current Duke) and his family. In form a medieval manor house, it has been described as "the most complete and most interesting house of period". The origins of the hall date to the 11th century. The interior and exterior of Haddon Hall (including the Long Gallery) were used in 1986 as Prince Humperdinck's castle in The Princess Bride. In 1990, the hall was the set for the castle of the giants at Harfang in the BBC's adaptation of The Silver Chair, one of . Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia.

Haddon Hall: Act III: Our heads we bow (Opening Chorus).

Haddon Hall is an English light opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and a libretto by Sydney Grundy. The opera, set at the eponymous hall, dramatises the legend of Dorothy Vernon's elopement with John Manners, resetting the tale in the 17th century. It premiered at the Savoy Theatre on 24 September 1892 for a modestly successful run of 204 performances, closing on 15 April 1893. The piece was popular with amateur theatre groups, particularly in Britain, up to the 1920s, but it has been produced only sporadically since then.

The Prince Consort was formed in 1972 by a group of semi-professional musicians as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. Later it was expanded and augmented in collaboration with the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Edinburgh. The performance throughout is very professional. It is perhaps unfair to pick out particular singers, but I was especially impressed by the singing of Mary Timmons as Dorothy and by Ian Lawson as Rupert. The chorus is excellent and the orchestra plays well although the violins seem slightly undernourished in places. David Lyle conducts with style
