The Second is not a great pianistic 'display' piece, like either his First or Third piano concerti (or even the Paganini Rhapsody), but it's got a wealth of warm Russian Romantic melody, and it exploits the idea of piano WITH orchestra (as opposed to piano AGAINST orchestra) extremely well. It's not an easy piece for the pianist-even Rachmaninov himself said that it didn't lie 'naturally' for the hand, but with that said, it's a very well-thought out work within its own limits.

Tchaikovsky Piano Cto 2. with the Santa Monica Symphony under Jacques Rachmilvich. Condition: EXCELLENT, some faint scuffing from handling, very quiet. Album great bottom edge a little rubbed. JACQUES RACHMILOVICH was a more-than-capable Russian maestro who migrated to the west coast to up the quality of musical life here, forming the short-lived Santa Monica Symphony. It was with this orchestra that he did the renowned (debut?) recording with Shura Cherkassky of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto.
