Endless Wire is the Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot's thirteenth original album, released in 1978 on Warner Bros. Although the album continued in the musical and writing style of Summertime Dream (1976), it marked the beginning of the end of Lightfoot's commercial success as a recording artist, although he remained both a prolific songwriter and popular as a live act.

Lightfoot began going through the motions here, and although there are some good tunes here such as "Daylight Katy" and "Hangdog Hotel Room," others appear to be weary without being arranges as such. He even re-records "The Circle Is Small" without any better results than the original. The downward slide had begun.

Down in the dark of a burnt out soul There's a few good second hand dreams Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you Down in the black of a bottomless hole There's a few good second hand scenes Deep in the dark of a heavenly blue Where the sea runs green.

lets go baby
I have to disagree with the view of this album being the product of a tired performer, but rather view this as one showing an artist willing to take risks with arrangements and vocalizations. If anything, this is one of his most consistently creative and mature albums, culminating with an excellent interpretation of The Circle Is Small. This version shows the early version as a callow product of youth. You can feel the heartbreak in his voice as he sings this song of betrayal. Unfortunately, this would be his interpretative peak, and while his voice remained strong for a number of albums, his songs would never be this strong again.

A fine album if not his very best. The All Music review ignores the title song, which is beautifully grim though admittedly not as searing as Ribbon of Darkness, but what is? If Children had Wings I'd also a lovely song. The rest are not the titans of his catalog but none are stinkers. Few artists produce as many listenable songs in a career as Lightfoot delivers here.
