AMG's review is right on - this is an absolutely electric live album that captures Thee Oh Sees in what must surely be the peak of their powers. This band's studio output gets better and better - how rare is it to see a rocker like band leader and creative force John Dwyer make his most powerful and impactful music after 15 years of recordings and countless compositions? Nonetheless, in 2016 Thee Oh Sees is one of rock's most vital bands, and this album is an hour of wild, dangerous rock music from a band that has lit up rock's underground. But isn't this album a slightly missed opportunity too? Thee Oh Sees have something like 13 studio albums, at least two single's compilations, and a number of EP's and other appearances. Anathema as a traditional 'best- of' compilation might be to indie DIY rockers, a great live album can substitute as an entry point for a new fan. In this case, Live in San Francisco does very well, and is clearly the closest Thee Oh Sees have to a record where much of their best work over the years can be heard. But there are several live staples missing, and the album is only an hour. A 2-CD/4-sides vinyl release could have added another 20 minutes in which to put 'Encrypted Bounce', 'Poor Queen', 'Turned Out Light', 'Lupine Ossuary' or any other of this band's great songs that still make up so much of their live sets. This album could have been their greatest moment - their 'Alive', their 'Live at Fillmore East', their 'Frampton Comes Alive!', their 'Live Bullet'. But its just a bit too short and incomplete to be that kind of definitive statement.Live in San Francisco is still a great document of one of 2016's most powerful and vital rock bands. It is essential for fans of Thee Oh Sees, and is highly recommended to anyone who loves loud, wild rock music, or anyone who loves a good live rock album. It is also a recommended starting point (along with the amazing 'Mutilator Defeated At Last') to hear one of the best rock bands performing today.
