Diana Krall spent the better part of the 2010s exploring byways of American song - her 2012 set Glad Rag Doll drew heavily on obscure jazz from the 1920s and '30s, its 2015 sequel Wallflower concentrated on pop and rock tunes - but 2017's Turn Up the Quiet finds the pianist/singer returning to well-known standards. from the Great American Songbook. The album isn't divided into triads but rather gently shifts between these bands, a move that's sometimes imperceptible because the focus is firmly on Krall, the pianist.

Many of the cuts have a very "live" feel. Some may point to imperfections, I enjoy the sense of spontaneity. To me that's what jazz is about. I think all the contributors had fun putting this together. I had fun listening to it. If you're not into that, take a pass. If you are, you are going to like this a lot.

Back to her roots so to speak. This album both serves as a incredible work to listen deeply to and enjoy the elegance of talent portrayed as well as an excellent recording to sit down to a nice drink to. Any fans of Diana's voice and piano will certainly enjoy this recording, especially on LP where it really shines.

Welcome back to what you was blessed to do. Sing and play jazz. As for those who didn't like the "real sound" of your voice. I put my faith in you and Tommy. You've both forgotten more than the critics will ever know. You know about Billie, some said she couldn't sing and Comedian Billy Crystal's aunt said about Louis Armstrong when he was at Billy's house when Billy was a kid (Billy's dad was a jazz musician), "Why don't he just clear his throat?!" Bravo Diana!

Her voice has never been better than on this fantastic album! To me she is matched only by Shirley Horn as the best jazz singer of all time!

Hushed vocals - so much so that her voice falters frequently. Regrettably it lends one to feel that she has trouble holding notes and the enunciation is flawed. Weak album. Piano playing is still exciting though.
