Motor Totemist Guild - Shapuno Zoo mp3 download

Motor Totemist Guild is a California band now widely considered part of the American Rock in Opposition scene, along with bands such as 5uu's and Thinking Plague. Their music is often compared to that of the European originators of the RIO movement, such as Henry Cow and Univers Zero. However, Motor Totemist Guild encompasses influences far beyond this subgenre of European progressive rock, including traditional music of Laos and Cambodia and music of the American swing era. Between 1984 and 2000, 1984, MTG released 7 albums alone and three as a combination with 5uu's. Most of Shapuno Zoo appeared on CD in 1996 on compilations titled Archive One and Archive Two. This video was made from the complete, original vinyl LP released in 1988.

Shapuno Zoo consecrated the Motor Totemist Guild as one of the leading creative forces on the avant rock/chamber rock front. The MTG's first record to be distributed in Europe, Shapuno Zoo reached a wider audience. It also marked the first collaboration between composer James Grigsby and recording engineer Curt Wilson. For the first time, the Motor Totemist Guild has a more than decent sound on record. The lineup remains relatively the same: James Grigsby (composition, guitar, keyboards), Becky Heninger (cello), and Lynn Johnston (clarinets, saxophones) remain, while singer/flutist Emily.

Motor Totemist Guild biography Motor Totemist Guild was formed in 1980 by composer James Grigsby and poet/singer Christine Clements. Throughout the 1970's Grigsby had been involved with the study and performance of electronic music, Renaissance polyphony, progressive rock, post-Webern serialism, Balinese gamelan and punk-jazz. Clements was active in the San Francisco poetry scene. In 1984, after a move to Los Angeles, they released their first project, Infra Dig, the inaugural LP release on Grigsby's private label, Rotary Totem Records. BTW the 'Imperfection' song could also be found in the 'Shapono zoo' album, with Emily Hay's vocals. Inspite Emily Hay being an excellent vocalist, nevertheless I prefer Kurt Wilson execution for this song. Maybe I just got used to it more than Hay execution.

They joined forces again in 1988 on the MTG album Shapuno Zoo. The track "Imperfections" is on both albums, sung by Kurt Wilson on Elements and by Emily Hay on Shapuno Zoo. Then in 1990 the core of both groups formed U Totem and released a 7-track self-titled L. James Grigsby released two more records in 1999 under the name Motor Totemist Guild, although still with David Kerman (and on one of the two releases, 5uu's/U Totem keyboardist Sanjay Kumar. All America City is the soundtrack to a film called YU GAKUSEI, and City of Mirrors (the one without Sanjay Kumar, but featuring original 5uu's vocalist Kurt Wilson on the opener) is a proper album. One track is essentially an extended bluesy jam called "Bixby Slough" and runs about 30 minutes, but I actually haven't spent much time listening to these last two records.
