Hermann Goetz’s lifespan was no longer than Mozart’s, and though much admired by contemporaries, as a tragic genius his music became almost forgotten, and the domain of but a few connoisseurs such as Gustav Mahler. Goetz’s style remained closer to Schumann and Mendelssohn, preferring lyricism and clarity to the more radical approaches of Liszt and Wagner. The virtuoso First Piano Concerto was a student work, its lovely central Adagio sharing a use of colourful wind parts with the freshly optimistic Second Piano Concerto composed six years later.

Bottom line: In many respects, these two large-scale chamber works are at the level of comparable pieces by Bruchs, Dvorak, and Raff: substantial, animated, inventive, and striking late Romantic specimens guaranteed to please lovers of Mendelssohn and Schumann.

The Second Concerto is a brute of a piece with a massive first-movement cadenza that Bavouzet drifts into almost without our noticing, striding across one vast tundra after another before brass and timps boldly emerge with news that he’s at last reached the other side. No Romantic concerto harbours more gruelling technical demands or a potentially richer pay-off as a result of them, and Bavouzet is on magnificent form. The Fourth (left-hand) and Fifth Concertos are notable for their burlesque use of the bass drum, vividly captured by the Chandos engineers.
