CHRIS POTTER UNDERGROUND - Chris Potter/saxophone, Adam Rogers/guitar, Fima Ephron/bass, Dan Weiss/drums. This group has served for more than a decade as Potter’s primary electric ensemble, with influences as diverse as Duke Ellington, James Brown, Stockhausen, and Radiohead, always with an emphasis on groove. After a hiatus of several years, Chris Potter Underground is pleased to be touring again in early 2018. Their debut album, which features Evelyn Glennie and Steve Lehman, is due for release this May. "Genuinely complex, uncompromising, at times very beautiful, and above all deeply engaging. I'd never heard anything quite like it (a novel experience at a jazz gig) and was immediately hooked. He continued in this electrified, groove-oriented vein with 2007’s Follow The Red Line: Live at the Village Vanguard (with guitarist Adam Rogers replacing Krantz in the lineup).
Graduating from Manhattan in 1993, Potter began a long series of sideman activities with top names like the Mingus Big Band, Paul Motian, Ray Brown, Jim Hall, James Moody, Dave Douglas, Mike Mainieri and many more. In 1994 he was signed by Concord Records and recorded five CDs. His final Concord CD, 1998’s Vertigo, was named one of the year’s top ten CDs by both Jazziz and The New York Times. He also performed on Steely Dan’s Grammy-nominated, gold album Two Against Nature, touring with them in 1994, which also resulted in the live CD, Alive in America .
