Camille Thomas / Alexandre Bloch / L'Orchestre National de Lille - Saint-Saëns, Offenbach mp3 download

Camille Thomas moved from Paris to study music in Berlin. Accompanied on this album by the Orchestre National de Lille and conductor Alexandre Bloch, Thomas is fascinated by the charms of youth displayed by Offenbach and Saint-Saëns in their early cello works, which exploit the instrument’s full virtuosic and expressive potential.

Saint-Saëns himself arranged his Suite for cello and piano, Op. 16, for orchestra, and it's a sparkling, tuneful work. And if all you know of Offenbach is the famed Can-Can, sample the Introduction, Prière, et Boléro for cello and orchestra, Op. 22, for more tunes that you'll be humming after the disc or hard drive has finished spinning. With some nice bonus pieces from guest artists, this is an album that inhabits a youthful spirit rather than trying to scale the heights out of the box. Played with conviction, and highly recommended.

Album · 2017 · 14 Songs. This French-Belgian cellist explores the seductive world of 19th-century Paris. Saint-Saëns’ beautiful First Cello Concerto proves the ideal vehicle for her deep, burnished tone (as does the composer’s arranged aria Mon coeur s’ouvre à ta voix ). But the concerto also displays her sense of fun, its filigree passages dispatched with grace. That sense of style comes to the fore, too, in one of Offenbach’s works for cello, the Introduction, Prière et Boléro," neglected until now but full of virtuosic zest and operatic grandeur.
