Though Chopped & Screwed is Micachu & the Shapes' second album, it’s hard to call it a true follow-up to Jewellery's brilliant avant pop. This collaboration with the London Sinfonietta brings the group’s experimental undercurrent - as well as other aspects of Mica Levi's musical background - to the fore, taking these compositions in very different directions than their debut

The band performed with the London Sinfonietta at Kings Place, London in May 2010 and in March 2011 released the live recording as the album "Chopped and Screwed". Unlike their previous effort, the recording largely avoids pop sensibilities in favor of a slower, hip-hop indebted style and repetitive, discordant string arrangements  . After 2009’s ground-breaking debut Jewellery, East London trio Micachu & The Shapes return with Chopped & Screwed, an album created from a concert they performed with the prestigious London Sinfonietta last May. The collaboration played to Mica Levi’s musical education (although she describes herself as primarily a beat-maker ) - she studied composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Just before her second LP drops she knocks out an improvised album inspired by the hip-hop process of ‘chopping and screwing’, (halving tempo, skipping beats and affecting portions of the original music) a scene that also involves battering loads of codeine cough syrup; a fun way to kill an afternoon. So we’re left to enjoy a stark, uncompromising and haunted soundscape in which Micachu pops and flits around, tumbling amongst tortured strings and off-kilter percussion with her band jamming with some geriatric fiddlers.
