Paul Quinichette was known as "the Vice Pres" because he sounded so similar to Lester Young ("Pres") during the 1950s. Despite that fault (his lack of originality), Quinichette was quite creative and swinging within Young's style and his recordings were consistently rewarding during the era. On this Verve CD reissue, the music of two full Lps (The Vice Pres and Sequel) are reissued plus six previously unheard alternate takes. Quinichette is heard in a a sextet with both pianist Kenny Drew and organist Bill Doggett, jamming in a nonet arranged by Ernie Wilkins, playing.
Original pressing on blue deep groove EmArcy drummer labels. Title appears as The Vice 'Pres' on front cover, but differently on different parts of release: Upper-left of back cover: "The Vice-Pres" Along sides of back cover: "The Vice Pres. Labels: "The Vice Pres". Matrix, Runout (Side A Label): MG-36027 A.

Paul Quinichette (May 17, 1916 – May 25, 1983) was an American jazz musician who played the tenor saxophone. He was known as the "Vice President" or "Vice Prez" for his uncanny emulation of the breathy style of Lester Young, known as "Prez". Young, who affectionately called everyone "Lady " (he called Billie Holiday "Lady Day"), called him "Lady Q". He was also capable of a gruffer style on his own.
Released in limited quantities, The Vice Pres will give fans of swing music and early R&B much to savor. Maybe the Quinichette legacy will also grab a bit more of the authority that seemed to elude the man while he was on this planet. Personnel: Paul Quinichette (tenor saxophone); Joe Newman, Buck Clayton (trumpet); Henry Coker, Dicky Wells (trombone); Marshal Royal (alto sax); Charlie Fowlkes (baritone sax); Kenny Drew, Count Basie, Bobby Tucker, John Williams (piano); Bill Doggett, Count Basie, Marlowe Morris (organ); Freddie Green, Jerome Darr (guitar); Jimmy Lewis, Al McKibbon, Milt Hinton, Walter Page, Gene Ramey (bass); Gus Johnson, Les Erskine (drums).
