Gulbenkian Foundation Chorus, Lisbon, Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra, Lisbon, Paul McCreesh. Louis-Ferdinand Hérold: Le Pré aux Clercs.

Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra, Lisbon.

Le pré aux clercs (The Clerks' Meadow) is an opéra comique in three acts by Ferdinand Hérold with a libretto by François-Antoine-Eugène de Planard based on Prosper Mérimée's Chronique du temps de Charles IX of 1829. Le pré aux clercs was premiered in Paris by the Opéra-Comique at the Salle de la Bourse on 15 December 1832

Tracklist: Louis-Ferdinand Herold (1791-1833) Le Pre aux clercs. Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim - Weismann: String Quartets (Arr. for String Orchestra) (2010). Alex North - A Streetcar Named Desire (OST) (Remastered) (2019).

The name of Louis-Ferdinand Hérold will always be associated with one work, in England at least, and that is his ballet La Fille Mal Gardée. Who can forget the famous Clog Dance in Frederick Ashton’s production, although having watched a German production on VHS some years ago I remember being shocked by its omission. The chorus have been well drilled and are a valuable part of this production, as are the Orquestra Gulbenkian under the direction of Paul McCreesh. The overall effect can hardly be described as 'grand opera', and actually reminds me more of the great French operetta tradition. I just wish it was longer. The recorded sound is excellent. Overture Ferdinand Hérold; Orquestra Gulbenkian; Paul McCreesh. Le pré aux clercs, Act I. 2. Act I Scene 1: Introduction: Ah! Quel beau jour de fête (Chorus, Girot, Nicette) Ferdinand Hérold; Jeanne Crousaud; Christian Helmer; Coro Gulbenkian; Orquestra Gulbenkian; Paul McCreesh. 3. Act I Scene 2: Dialogue: Ah! Reposons-nous (Girot, Nicette) Ferdinand Hérold; Jeanne Crousaud; Christian Helmer. 4. Act I Scene 2: Duet: Les rendez-vous de noble compagnie (Girot, Nicette) Ferdinand Hérold; Jeanne Crousaud; Christian Helmer; Orquestra Gulbenkian; Paul McCreesh.

Gulbenkian Conductor – Paul McCreesh. The former specialises in Italian bel canto, while Palazzetto Bru Zane, though based in Venice, is devoted to the rediscovery of French rarities. Hérold’s effervescent music is performed with tremendous charm by Paul McCreesh and the Gulbenkian Orchestra. The best arias go to Isabelle and Nicette. Isabelle’s ‘Jour de mon enfance’, which opens Act 2 in duet with a splendid violin concertante, finds Marie-Ève Munger in exquisite form, coloratura cascading like champagne.
