John Fogerty - Wrote A Song For Everyone (2013).

Wrote a Song for Everyone is a testament to the continuing truth and power in Fogerty’s greatest hits. The result is some of the best new music Fogerty has made since, well, Creedence. Fogerty revisits the country-dance party Almost Saturday Night, from 1975’s John Fogerty, with the real stuff: Urban’s tangy banjo work and saloon-brother harmonizing. And in a bold choice, revivalists Dawes help Fogerty resurrect a fine, lost ballad – Someday Never Comes, from Creedence’s last LP, 1972’s Mardi Gras – with a poignant twist. Fogerty based the song on a painful childhood conversation he had with his father.

Wrote a Song for Everyone" is the much-anticipated album by John Fogerty. Produced by Fogerty, one of rock’s most important artists and a national treasure who’s sold over 100 million records, "Wrote a Song for Everyone" is a celebration of his iconic songbook and a collection of twelve classics and deep tracks from his remarkable canon of hits as well as two brand new songs, Mystic Highway and Train of Fools. For a good portion of his solo career, John Fogerty refused to play any of his old Creedence Clearwater Revival songs – not because he hated them but because he was tied up in a nasty legal battle with Saul Zaentz, the head of his former record label Fantasy.

Despite my wife's claim of my having a man crush on Fogerty, I don't find him infallible. For me, WASFE falls somewhere between the luke-warm review here and the over the top love letter from Rolling Stone (remember when their opinion actually mattered?). There are some very nice moments here. The best are Dawes and Fogerty on "Someday Never Comes", the new song, "Mystic Highway", and the first half of the title song. In what is one of the most inappropriate guitar solos ever, Tom Modello (who is a talented guitarist) ruins an otherwise great duet with Miranda Lambert. A most pleasant surprise was "Hot Rod Heart" with Brad Paisley, who is an excellent player. This is good enough, and Fogerty's canon deep enough, to hope there is a second volume in the future.
